What is Order 81?

To put it briefly, Order 81 dictates that any farmer in Iraq has to purchase their seeds from one of two privately owned U.S companies; either Monsanto-Cargill or the World Wide Wheat Company. The seeds are genetically modified to produce crops for one cycle. The crops they then cultivate contain sterile seeds which are unusable. It forces these farmers to re-purchase seeds for the next season. Failure to do so will result in confiscation of agricultural tools among other things.

Who am I?

My name is Jonathan Terranova. I am an artist currently located in Atlanta, GA. I came upon Paul Bremer’s 100 Orders and created a series of works based around Order 81 specifically. This website is an extension of that series.
